Invest in yourself.

Success doesn’t just happen. You must train for it. You must develop it. It is not handed to you. That’s why you need to invest in yourself.

When is the last time you spent money on your career? Most people spend more money on entertainment or their wardrobe than their careers. Have you spent more money on your smart phone than your career? When is the last time you bought a book, attended a seminar, and got new business cards?

If you’re not investing in yourself and your career, how can you expect other people to?

You need to treat your career, your success and your potential like the biggest competition of your life. Take this seriously by investing in yourself.

TIPS:

Read career/motivational/inspiring books.

Read LEAN In: Women, Work, and the will to lead by Sheryl Sandberg (available on-line for free).

Find people who inspire you and read their stories. I personally gravitate towards strong, independent female leaders in all genres (comedians, CEO’s, business leaders, athletes).

Assess how you look. Do you still look like a student even though you’re done school?

Take an inventory of your professional wardrobe, is it time to update it?

How do you sound? Read up on how to sound more articulate and confident when you speak.  Work on your public speaking skills.

Develop your writing skills. By writing and practicing and asking for feedback.

Listen to inspiring TED TALKs or other videos regarding the habits of successful people.

Hang out with like-minded people.

Attend a career seminar/workshop or social group.

Read empowering blogs (like mine!) on a daily basis to keep you motivated and on track.

Listen to audio tapes in the car, while you’re on the bus, or working out. I always listen to sales training CD’s in the car to motivate me. I never listen to the radio or music unless I’m working out.

If you can’t remember the last time you invested in your career, then it’s time to invest.

Get rid of the guilt! You deserve to invest in yourself. Do NOT feel guilty for spending money on your career and on services or products that will help you fulfill your dreams.

You are worthy of success. Now surround yourself with things that motivate you to jump out of bed at 5am and work on your dreams.
