When things don’t go your way…Part 1.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed with life, school or work, that little voice in your head (that negative voice that always doubts you) can play havoc with your self-esteem.

Here are some strategies to help you stay focused and motivated on the bigger picture: fulfilling your potential!

  1. Take ACTION. Even if it’s baby steps, take some type of action to keep moving your forward. Never just do nothing. It’s debilitating.
  2. Always aim higher, raise your goals & expectations. Even though things may not have worked out for you in this one instance, don’t ever lower your goals or ambitions. Always aim higher.  
  3. Hang out with a better crowd of people. Be conscious and selective of whom you spend your time with, because you feed off other people’s energies. Hang out with negative people all the time and you’ll start feeling negative too. Hang out with average people, and you’ll start thinking average is just fine.
  4. Compete with yourself. Avoid comparing yourself to others. Instead, ask yourself, how well do you fulfill your potential every day? Are you really pushing yourself to excel and move out of your comfort zone?  Stop compartmentalizing and comparing yourself.
  5. Focus on the now. Keep it simple. Don’t let your mind wander down that rabbit hole of hypothetical situations. Focus on the task at hand, the project or paper you need to write, not the fact that you’re behind schedule or don’t have all the resources you need.
  6. It’s all on you. Recognize that no one is going to swoop down and rescue you or save you. It’s literally all on you. IF you want a better life, it’s on you. If you want a better job, a better career, more money or success, it’s all on you. Once you realize this, you can see that you have the power to change your life, its freedom.
  7. Feel your emotions, but limit the pity party. It’s awful when things don’t work out and you get rejected or fail at something. Acknowledge your emotions, but recognize that you are NOT your emotions. Have a short pity party and move on.
  8. Always focus on the priority. When things go awry, keep your focus. What’s the bigger picture? Always go back to the ultimate vision you have for yourself. Working on your dream is tough, and you’ll go through extreme exhaustion, pain, rejection, failure and then…eventually success. Just keep your eye on the ultimate prize.
  9. Find multiple sources of support. Lean on your mentors and supporters for help when you’re down.
  10. Rephrase your inner negative voice. Whenever you find you’re being harsh or overly negative with yourself (e.g. “I’m such an idiot, I’ll never finish this….I’m not good enough, smart enough, etc.”), immediately rephrase these negative thoughts into something positive. “I’m good enough. I can do this. I’m smart enough, capable enough. It might be tough, but I’ll finish the project, etc.”  That negative voice is just mind noise; recognize it for what it is.
